Fresh basil is one of those magical ingredients that can transform the simplest dish into something extraordinary. But if you’ve ever bought a big bunch — or clipped a handful from your own plant — you know how quickly it can wilt or turn dark.
After testing (and failing!) with the refrigerator method, I’ve finally found the very best way to store fresh basil. And the best part? It’s so easy, and requires nothing more than a simple glass jar.

Why Basil Is Different from Other Herbs
In my post on The Ultimate Way to Store Fresh Herbs, I shared my favorite method for keeping herbs like parsley, thyme, oregano, mint, and rosemary fresh for weeks in the refrigerator.
Naturally, I received many questions asking: “Will this work for basil too?”
So, I tried it. Several times. And the verdict? Basil simply doesn’t like the cold. It keeps its color for a couple of days in the refrigerator, then quickly wilts and turns black. Basil is happiest at room temperature — and with a little water, it thrives.
The Best Way to Store Fresh Basil
Here’s the method I now use (and love!):
- Trim the stems at a 45° angle. If you’re harvesting from your own plant, cut just above a leaf node — this encourages new growth.
- Remove the bottom leaves from the stems.
- Place the basil in a clear glass jar (I like to reuse Bonne Maman jam jars), and fill with cold water.
- Keep the jar at room temperature on a sunny windowsill.
That’s it! Your basil will stay fresh for weeks this way, and the stems will often sprout roots — which means you can even plant them again to grow more basil.

How Long Will Fresh Basil Last?
Stored this way, basil cuttings will stay vibrant and flavorful for two weeks or more, as long as you refresh the water when needed. If roots appear after a couple of weeks, you can transplant them into soil for a whole new basil plant.
What Kind of Container Works Best?
A clear glass jar is ideal because it lets you easily monitor the water level and root growth. In my kitchen, I often use empty French jam jars, but any sturdy glass container will work.
A Fresh Basil Plant Makes a Thoughtful Gift
If you’re propagating basil and want to share, a rooted basil stem makes the sweetest little housewarming or hostess gift.
Here’s how to prepare it:
- Tuck the whole thing inside a pretty napkin or swatch of fabric, and tie with ribbon for a French-inspired touch.
- Wrap the roots in a damp paper towel.
- Slip the base into a small watertight bag (or beeswax wrap) to keep it moist.
Include a simple note: “Plant in well-draining soil, water generously, and place in a sunny spot.” Voilà — a gift that keeps on giving.
Enjoy Your Fresh Basil
With this method, you’ll never have to watch a beautiful bunch of basil wilt in your fridge again. Instead, you’ll have weeks of vibrant, fragrant leaves at your fingertips — and maybe even a few new plants for your garden.
